SHAH ALAM, Aug 8 — The dual-function reservoir projects at Sungai Klang and Sungai Rasau, designed for both flood mitigation and raw water supply, are progressing well and expected to be completed by 2031.

In a written parliamentary reply, Deputy Prime Minister II and Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the works are divided into two main packages.

Package A will be managed by the Water Supply Department (JBA) while Package B will be overseen by the Irrigation and Drainage Department (DID).

“The ministry, through JBA, is committed to keeping the project on schedule, maintaining regular engagement with stakeholders throughout its implementation,” he said.

Package A, which involves the design-and-build works, has been classified as a high-priority flood mitigation project under the 12th Malaysia Plan’s Fourth Rolling Plan (RP4). The tender closed on July 15, 2025, with completion targeted for 2029.

Package B, which covers the Petaling, Sepang, Kuala Langat and Klang districts, began on July 22, 2024, and is slated for completion on October 20, 2031.

“Physical progress currently stands at 1.21 per cent,” Fadillah said.

The Sungai Klang–Sungai Rasau ponds are intended to both lower flood risks and serve as a sustainable raw water source for Selangor.

In 2022, then Environment and Water Minister Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man announced a RM5.6 billion federal allocation for the dual-function reservoir, along with Phase 2 of the Langat 2 water treatment plant.

Once completed, the two projects are expected to raise Selangor’s water reserve margin to over 15 per cent and supply 1.4 million litres of water daily to 467,000 account holders.
