KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 8 — Fourteen squatter houses and four commercial outlets, including Mydin Mart and Pasaraya Karnival, were destroyed in a fire in Pantai Dalam here late last night.

No injuries were reported in the incident, according to Pantai Fire and Rescue Station chief Wan Mohd Shahrir Azizi Wan Said.

In a statement today, he said the Kuala Lumpur Operations Centre received an emergency call regarding the incident at 11.11 pm, following which 36 personnel from the Pantai, Hang Tuah, Seputeh and Sri Hartamas fire stations were dispatched.

Wan Mohd Shahrir Azizi said the fire destroyed about 80 per cent of the squatter homes on a 0.074-hectare site and the shop premises covering approximately 0.223 hectares.

“The upper levels of Pasaraya Karnival were totally destroyed; the ground floor of Mydin Mart was 20 per cent burnt, while three adjacent shops sustained 90 per cent damage each.

“The blaze was brought under control at 1.49 am,” he said, adding that the cause of the fire was still under investigation.
