PUTRAJAYA, Aug 5 — The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) and global aerospace company Boeing have teamed up to make air traffic operations more efficient at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

This strategic collaboration will enhance operational efficiency at one of Southeast Asia’s busiest airports, streamlining coordination between pilots and air traffic controllers for smoother air traffic management.

In a joint statement issued today, both CAAM and Boeing said the new operational concept, once implemented, will improve how aeroplanes approach and land, using smarter flight paths and descent profiles, and help reduce fuel burn and minimise delays, while keeping the existing airspace design intact.

CAAM chief executive officer Datuk Captain Norazman Mahmud stressed the importance of the collaboration, stating that the initiative is a crucial step in aligning Malaysia’s air traffic management with international best practices.

“By partnering with Boeing, we are harnessing global expertise to optimise operations at KLIA, ensuring we are ready to accommodate future growth safely and sustainably.

“This effort reflects CAAM’s continued commitment to innovation and regulatory excellence in Malaysia’s aviation sector,” he said.

Meanwhile, Boeing Commercial Airplanes senior vice-president of product strategy, product development and development programmes Mike Sinnett said air passenger growth in Malaysia is set to rise by 50 per cent over the next five years.

“We are committed to supporting Malaysia’s civil aviation industry and working with CAAM to deliver sustainable, long-term solutions that enhance the safety and efficiency of its modern air traffic system,” he added.

The joint statement also said both parties would work closely to assess current operations and develop the new concept, which will be going through a regulatory review and certification in Malaysia.

It said once the new concept is certified, Boeing will support CAAM through the implementation process, applying its global expertise in aeroplane performance and air traffic management to support Malaysia’s aviation goals.

Boeing and Malaysia have worked in partnership for 78 years to support the development of aerospace and defence capabilities in the country.
