KOTA KINABALU, Aug 3 — The state government is pursuing a dual-pronged approach to nutrition by actively strengthening food security and empowering the rural economy via sustainable and modern agricultural approaches, said Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari.

This includes initiatives like the production of Selangor Melons in Felda Sungai Tengi Selatan, which has become a model for high-value agriculture through the use of modern hydro-fertigation systems.

"In Sekinchan, introducing the usage of the Internet of Things in paddy farming has significantly boosted harvest yields and operational efficiency.

"Through the Sabak Bernam Development Area (Sabda) and the Selangor Integrated Landing Port (SILP), agricultural and fisheries zones are being developed into new growth areas, targeting RM1.9 billion in investment and creating 3,600 job opportunities," he said in a post on social media today.

Amirudin is in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, where he attended the closing ceremony of the 2025 National Farmers, Breeders, and Fishermen's Day today, which was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, and Agriculture and Food Security Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup were also present.

Noting that this year is he programme's golden jubilee celebration, which brought together key players in Malaysia's agri-food sector, he said that Selangor also plays its part, citing the development of the Selangor Food Warehouse (GMS) as an example.

"The first national food stockpiling centre for rice, frozen meat, and other staple goods, which can ensure supply during crises and help stabilise food prices for the people.

"In conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the National Farmers, Breeders, and Fishermen's Day, these commitments reflect the state government’s unwavering dedication to positioning the agri-food sector as a strategic pillar of Selangor's development, while fostering a resilient, modern, and competitive rural economy," Amirudin said.
