Brazil to respond to 50 pct US tariff, open to talks

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug 2 — Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said his government remains open to dialogue with the United States (US) but is currently working on a response to the 50 per cent tariffs imposed by Washington on certain Brazilian goods effective August 1.

“We have always been open for dialogue. We are now working to respond to the US tariff measures,” TASS news agency quoted Lula as saying on its official page on X.

He stressed that only Brazilian citizens and institutions have the right to determine the country's direction, including its relationship with the US.

US President Donald Trump announced the 50 per cent tariff , citing the need to address the trade deficit with Brazil.

Lula said Brazil would introduce retaliatory tariffs if the US did not reconsider its decision.

However, he also expressed hope that the Brazilian delegation could push for a revision of the tariffs through negotiations.
