SHAH ALAM, July 26 — The Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) is prepared to implement the Selangor Intelligent Parking (SIP), starting August 1 as scheduled.
The Star reported mayor Datuk Mohd Fauzi Mohd Yatim as saying that the council accepts and supports the state government's decision.
“That is the state government’s decision, and we will comply and implement it regarding the parking concession matter,” he said during MBSA’s monthly full board meeting recently.
Fauzi added that MBSA collected RM21.9 million in parking fees and RM8.9 million in compounds last year.
Apart from MBSA, three other local authorities involved in the SIP pilot project scheduled for next month are the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ), the Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ), and the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS).
Earlier, Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari said the state government is still in discussions with the local authorities, including MBPJ, which had formally objected to the initiative.
“This is a matter of approval at the local authority level. The one currently objecting is MBPJ, and we will examine the basis of their objection because we want to increase revenue collection, especially from parking.
“Previously, only 30 per cent of potential parking revenue was collected, meaning 70 per cent was lost. We need to improve this using technology,” he said.
According to the state executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato' Ng Suee Lim, the SIP aims to enhance security and parking management through digital systems and artificial intelligence, while reducing reliance on manual enforcement.
He also assured the public that no changes to parking rates will be made.
