SELAYANG, July 27 — The Kampung Siaga 221 community programme should be extended to more localities to ensure more residents are equipped with basic knowledge and preparation for emergencies.
Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari said doing so could also help address the shortage of volunteers in certain areas.
“In Selangor, we have two main volunteer teams: Sukarelawan Selangor (SERVE), under the State Sports Council, with 10,000 registered members, 700 of whom have been trained by the Fire and Rescue Department.
“Then we have Team Selangor, also comprising 10,000 volunteers, with around 300 trained by the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM). These volunteers not only help run programmes and activities but also respond during disasters.

“Therefore, we need to expand such efforts in more communities so that the public is well-prepared with the knowledge to face crises or any unforeseen events,” he said.
Amirudin was speaking at the state-level launch of Kampung Siaga 221 at Kampung Nakhoda in Batu Caves earlier today.
In his speech, the Menteri Besar also emphasised the importance of having volunteers within communities, noting the disparity in Selangor between the number of volunteers and the state’s population, which exceeds seven million.
He noted that implementing Kampung Siaga 221 not only fosters preparedness and awareness for emergency aid but also contributes to the overall well-being of the community.
The programme involves 29 villages nationwide, with an estimated 10,771 participants, aimed at improving preparedness and early response among rural populations in the face of disasters.
