SHAH ALAM, July 14 — The recognition of the Forest Research Institute Malaysia’s (FRIM) Selangor Forest Park as a Unesco World Heritage Site marks a major boost to the state’s standing as a global eco-tourism destination and gives fresh momentum to the Visit Selangor Year 2025 campaign.

In a statement, Tourism Selangor said that the international recognition strengthens the state’s commitment to environmental conservation, cultural preservation, and promoting sustainable tourism.

“Tourism Selangor will continue working closely with stakeholders to promote sustainable tourism, create immersive travel experiences, and ensure the socio-economic benefits of this recognition are fully realised.

“At the same time, we are targeting Unesco global recognition for the Gombak-Hulu Langat Geopark by 2028, with a national-level reassessment scheduled for next year,” it said in a statement yesterday.

The state tourism promotion agency also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting FRIM and accelerating sustainability and eco-tourism initiatives throughout Selangor.

FRIM’s Selangor Forest Park was officially inscribed during the 47th session of the Unesco World Heritage Committee, held in Paris, France, from July 6 to 16 and chaired by Professor Nikolay Nenov of Bulgaria.

Developed on rehabilitated former tin mining land, the site is now considered a global model for tropical forest restoration and ecosystem rehabilitation.

State executive councillor for culture Datuk Borhan Aman Shah said the designation positions Selangor as a key destination for nature-based and educational tourism, and underscores the state’s leadership in environmental stewardship and global green heritage.

With this latest inclusion, Malaysia now has six Unesco World Heritage Sites:

  • Kinabalu Park, Sabah (2000)
  • Gunung Mulu National Park, Sarawak (2000)
  • Historic Cities of the Straits of Malacca — covering Melaka and George Town, Penang (2008)
  • Archaeological Heritage of the Lenggong Valley, Perak (2012)
  • Archaeological Heritage of Niah National Park Caves, Sarawak (2024)
  • Forest Research Institute Malaysia’s Selangor Forest Park (2025)
