Anwar receives courtesy call from Asean sec-gen, foreign ministers

KUALA LUMPUR, July 9 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today received a courtesy call from Asean foreign ministers, marking the start of a series of high-level engagements in conjunction with the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and Related Meetings (AMM) here.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan led his regional counterparts to the meeting, held ahead of the official opening ceremony by Anwar.

Present were Brunei Foreign Minister II Datuk Seri Setia Erywan Yusof, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn, Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono, Lao Foreign Minister Thongsavanh Phomvihane, Philippine Foreign Secretary Ma Theresa P. Lazaro, Singaporean Foreign Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa, and Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son.

Timor-Leste Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Minister Bendito dos Santos Freitas also attended, in accordance with the country’s status as an Asean observer.

Asean secretary-general Kao Kim Hourn was present as well.

The AMM is being held under Malaysia’s Asean chairmanship with the theme “inclusivity and sustainability”.

Over 1,500 delegates from Asean and its partners are involved in 24 ministry-level meetings spanning four days.
