KLANG, July 2 — The state government, via Landasan Lumayan Sdn Bhd (LLSB), has launched Sungai Klang's first waste separation facility to reduce solid river waste from ending up in landfills.
LSSB’s managing director Syaiful Azmen Nordin said the joint effort with The Ocean Cleanup, J&K Wonderland Foundation, and Coca-Cola Malaysia is expected to reduce the amount of waste that needs to be sent to landfills by about 20 per cent.
It is capable of processing up to 10,000kg of waste daily.
"With this sorting facility, we can separate plastics, as most of the waste found in this river is plastic. These can then be sent directly to recycling centres," he said after attending the facility's launch today.
It was officiated by Klang Mayor Dato’ Abd Hamid Hussain. Also present were Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry (NRES) secretary-general Datuk Ching Thoo and The Ocean Cleanup’s river management director Marco Piet.
Syaiful said the facility, which began operations in December, has since collected 4,000kg of plastic materials that were separated from the waste in Sungai Klang.
He added that Coca-Cola sponsored the waste separation facility for RM1.5 million.

Syaiful hopes that more waste sorting facilities would be built at other locations along Sungai Klang, particularly through collaboration with private companies that prioritise environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices.
“We welcome collaboration with other companies. We want these companies to implement ESG and see its impact immediately. With this facility, it also serves as a platform and medium to educate the public,” he said.
Earlier, in a Facebook post, the Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) said that the facility aims to clear and preserve Sungai Klang, the country’s most historically significant and heavily urbanised river.
It said the launch today marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to divert collected marine debris from landfills and promote sustainable recycling practices.
In November 2023, LLSB, a subsidiary of Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated), signed a memorandum of understanding with The Ocean Cleanup to establish a plastic waste sorting facility along Sungai Klang.
The facility, which falls under the Selangor Maritime Gateway (SMG) project, will host The Ocean Cleanup’s first purpose-built sorting facility in Malaysia, especially for plastics.
