SHAH ALAM, July 2 — Sungai Klang now has a dedicated waste separation facility, which aims to clear and preserve the country’s most historically significant and heavily urbanised river.

The Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) said the launch of the sorting facility today marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to divert collected marine debris from landfills and promote sustainable recycling practices.

"With this facility, materials collected from Sungai Klang can be separated and recycled, thereby helping to clean the river and preserve the marine ecosystem," it said in a Facebook post today.

The facility was launched by The Ocean Cleanup, in collaboration with Landasan Lumayan Sdn Bhd (LLSB), Yayasan J&K Wonderland, and Coca-Cola Malaysia.

It was officiated by Klang Mayor Dato' Abd Hamid Hussain, and witnessed by Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry (NRES) secretary-general Datuk Ching Thoo.

"Their presence reflects the government’s support in strengthening waste management systems and advancing environmental sustainability efforts in Malaysia,” MBDK said.

In November 2023, LLSB, a Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) subsidiary, signed a memorandum of understanding with The Ocean Cleanup to establish a plastic waste sorting facility along Sungai Klang.

The facility, which falls under the Selangor Maritime Gateway (SMG) project, will host The Ocean Cleanup's first purpose-built sorting facility in Malaysia, especially for plastics.
