SHAH ALAM, June 28 — A total of 28 core sports such as football, badminton, and sepak takraw will be contested at the 2026 Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Selangor, with five additional events being considered.
State executive councillor for sports Mohd Najwan Halimi said all high-profile events listed in Sukma regulations will continue, following the format of previous editions.
“The state is planning to add five more sports, and the Selangor State Sports Council (MSN) is currently in discussions with other state sports councils.
“A final decision will be made in July or August, before the proposal is presented to Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh,” he told Media Selangor.
Najwan added that the official number of events to be contested at the biennial tournament will be finalised by August.
“This comes a year ahead of the official Sukma 2026 dates, which are scheduled for August next year.”
The last time Selangor hosted Sukma was in 1998, when the state also emerged as overall champion.
In the 2025 Selangor Budget, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari announced an allocation of RM6 million for sports development programmes in preparation for the 22nd Sukma.
