SHAH ALAM, June 27 — Selangor’s raw water supply is sufficient, with main dams holding between three and six months’ capacity, ahead of the hot season and southwest monsoon, said state executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Dato’ Izham Hashim.

He said the seven main dams are at above 95 per cent capacity and, as of yesterday, are working well.

“Dam water levels in Selangor are expected to remain stable for several months even amid the southwest monsoon. The levels could improve during the monsoon transition, usually in October, and the northeast monsoon from November to March, when high rainfall is expected at catchment areas,” Izham said in a statement.

He added that 100 pools, including several former mines and river basins in Selangor, will be used to help the state face the drought.

“The Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) have identified additional pools and former mines near main rivers that are suitable for water supply infrastructure upgrades to increase raw water reserves.

“These pools are under the Selangor Off River Storage Scheme brand, and they can optimise the use of alternative water sources, with current supply capabilities of up to three months,” Izham said.

He said Luas has taken the initiative to optimise groundwater use as an alternative to treated water, especially for the industrial sector, under the Water Source Abstraction licence and charge.

“This is to lower dependence on treated water, especially during the dry season. For now, there are three groundwater wells built in Hulu Selangor for use especially during the dry season,” Izham explained.

Earlier, Meteorological Department director-general Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said the southwest monsoon, which began May 10, is set to continue until mid-September.

Selangor’s seven main dams are:

— Sungai Selangor Dam (Hulu Selangor)

— Sungai Tinggi Dam (Hulu Selangor)

— Tasik Subang Dam (Petaling)

— Sungai Langat Dam (Hulu Langat)

— Semenyih Dam (Hulu Langat)

— Klang Gates Dam (Gombak)

— Batu Dam (Gombak)
