SHAH ALAM, June 27 — The Petronas Sepang International Circuit has been chosen as the venue for the Malaysian Games (Sukma) 2026 opening ceremony.
State executive councillor for youth, sports and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi said the Selangor Sukma Secretariat wanted a different atmosphere from previous openings of the biennial event.
“The SIC will be different, and (the opening ceremony) will be inspired by the Paris Olympics opening event… as the Shah Alam Sports Complex is set to be completed in 2027/2028.
“(Holding the opening at the SIC) will highlight not only Selangor’s image as an economically and administratively progressive state, but also as a world-class sports event destination,” he told Media Selangor.

Najwan said preparations for the event are at about 45 per cent, with an allocation of RM200 million.
“Preparations are focused on repairing and upgrading existing facilities in Selangor,” he added.
On July 18 last year, the Sukma Supreme Committee named Selangor as host of Sukma 2026.
Selangor previously hosted the Sukma in 1998, emerging overall champion.
