SHAH ALAM, June 27 — The state government, with support from the Federal government, is committed to strengthening comprehensive flood control efforts to ensure the sustainability of the drainage system and the people's safety.

Selangor Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) director Datuk Mohammad Nazri Yasmin said the approach is long-term and encompasses the management of upstream, midstream, and downstream river areas.

“Flood prevention cannot rely on a single project. We need an integrated network of plans such as watershed management, river improvements, retention ponds, and intelligent monitoring systems,” he said.

Among the projects being planned are the construction of flood retention ponds, pump houses, floodgates, and dual-function reservoirs, as well as developing flood simulation systems, risk maps, water level monitoring, and automatic warning systems.

Nazri said that this approach is complementary, with physical systems helping to increase drainage capacity, while the use of technology enhances early warning capabilities and community preparedness.

“We can no longer think the old way — responding only after a flood. We must shift to integrated, technology-driven and more resilient planning,” he said.

RM1.5 billion allocated, initial project phase to begin end of this year

Following the major floods in December 2021, the Federal government allocated RM1.02 billion for four major flood control plans in Selangor, which are currently in the design phase and expected to commence by the end of this year.

The plans include the construction of dual-function reservoirs at Sungai Klang and Sungai Rasau (RM662.5 million), which will serve as both raw water sources and flood control infrastructure.

They are expected to enhance Sungai Klang's drainage system and increase water catchment capacity.

Simultaneously, the state government has allocated RM90.8 million for seven flood prevention projects in high-risk areas, including the second phase of the Sungai Rasau project, which involves constructing a pump house, a TNB substation, and a control room.

Other works include river improvement and upgrading the Sungai Kandis Bridge.

Flood early warning system expected by 2026

A technology-based flood early warning system is currently being developed and is expected to be completed by 2026. It involves installing and water level monitoring stations, simulation systems, and automatic alarms to provide early alerts to residents.

“This technology enables the public to prepare in advance and helps save lives and property,” Nazri said.

He emphasised that close cooperation between the state and Federal governments will continue to be strengthened to ensure that Selangor not only reduces the impact of floods but also becomes a model state in disaster management.
