KLANG, June 26 — The Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) has allocated over RM32 million this year to implement flood mitigation projects, said its mayor Dato' Abd Hamid Hussain.

He said the funding involves 18 projects, including constructing retention ponds, rubbish traps, and upgrading drainage and sewerage systems.

“All of these projects are being carried out and planned to address flooding issues, among them flood mitigation works along Jalan Dato Dagang 1 and Jalan Kota Raja, which are estimated to cost RM10 million, as well as a retention pond at Jalan Sentosa and drainage upgrades, each involving funding of RM300,000.

“Each project is currently underway, and some will take up to 12 months to complete. These are not simple road resurfacing works that can be done in a week.

“Contractors are carrying out the works according to the scheduled timeline, but some projects face obstacles like underground pipes, electrical cables, or sewerage systems that were not previously identified,” he told Media Selangor.

As a result, Abd Hamid hopes the special committee comprising all government agencies and chaired by the state executive councillor for agriculture and infrastructure Dato' Izham Hashim, will help resolve such issues more swiftly.

On a separate matter, he said that contractors have been appointed to carry out cleaning works across Klang.

“For your information, KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM) has been appointed by MBDK for drain cleaning and rubbish collection. However, for the maintenance of monsoon drains with a width of 1.5 metres, we have appointed 31 contractors to carry out the cleaning work.

“For the maintenance of playgrounds and recreational areas, around 60 contractors have been appointed to carry out grass cutting and cleaning. Each of these contractors is monitored to ensure that works are carried out in accordance with the specified standards,” Abd Hamid said.
