PETALING JAYA, June 22 — Women’s rugby is among events being considered for the 2026 Malaysian Games (Sukma) in Selangor.
State executive councillor for women empowerment and welfare Anfaal Saari said the women’s rugby field is growing and deserves to be contested at the biennial sporting event, which could train more reserve athletes for the country.
“The establishment of a women’s division in the Selangor rugby league was an important first step to women’s sports development in the state. I am confident that with continuous commitment, women’s rugby can be elevated to Sukma, and eventually, the global stage.
“Women, too, have great talent and potential in the rugby world; they just need the space and chance to showcase their abilities. Sukma is a stage to gather and discover rugby’s best talents,” she said when met after the Women’s Rugby League finals at Padang Astaka here yesterday.
The event was organised by the Selangor Rugby Association and Selangor State Sports Council.
On June 10, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the theme and events to be contested at the 2026 Sukma Selangor, as well as the locations for the opening and closing ceremonies, will be announced in August.
Selangor previously hosted the Sukma in 1998, when it emerged overall champion.
