SHAH ALAM, June 5 — With the groundbreaking of the Selangor Aero Park (SAP) today, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari called the proposed Kita Selangor Rail the final piece of the puzzle that would connect the Klang Valley’s industry, people, and major transport networks.

At the groundbreaking, Amirudin acknowledged the financial challenges involved, but gave the state’s assurance of full support to ensure the project is realised.

“If we can realise the SAP’s full potential, there is one missing link that could join the dotted lines to connect industry, people, and major transport infrastructure in Selangor and the Klang Valley, and that is the Selangor Rail my team and I initially proposed to you and your team at the MOT (Transport Ministry) some months ago,” he said at the SAP site in Sepang today, with Transport Minister Anthony Loke present.

“While we are fully aware of the financial complexities involved, I assure you we are prepared to give you our full intellectual and technical support to realise this vision to connect KLIA, Subang Airport, existing sea ports in Port Klang, including the upcoming third port in Carey Island, with the blessing of the Cabinet.”

Plans for a new railway that will run across the Selangor coast was first mooted as part of the state Pakatan Harapan election manifesto ahead of the state polls in August 2023.

Initially, the proposal said the line will run from Klang to Sabak. In February, state executive councillor for investment, trade and mobility Ng Sze Han told the Selangor State Legislative Assembly that the network will extend to KLIA, Sungai Pelek in Sepang, and Tanjung Sepat in Kuala Langat.

The project is expected to take 10 years to complete and potentially connect to the East Coast Rail Link.

In his speech, Amirudin noted that the Kita Selangor Rail is part of the First Selangor Plan, the state’s five-year development blueprint that ends this year and includes major regional development zones like the Sabak Bernam Development Area and the Integrated Development Region in South Selangor (Idriss).

He said the SAP will be among the key projects under Idriss, which covers the state’s southern areas of Sepang and Kuala Langat.

Amirudin added that today’s SAP groundbreaking ceremony indicated the government’s preparedness to develop the aerospace industry.
