SHAH ALAM, May 28 — On the heels of Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli’s resignation announcement earlier today, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad has stepped down as natural resources and environmental sustainability minister, effective July 4.
Nik Nazmi, who will be on leave from tomorrow to July 3, said he sent his resignation letter to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The Setiawangsa MP, who was defeated in the recent Parti Keadilan Rakyat polls, said his role as previous vice-president was a major consideration in his appointment to Cabinet.
“Seeing as I couldn’t defend my post in the recent party election, I have decided to resign as minister,” he said in a statement today.
At last week’s Keadilan polls, Nik Nazmi lost the 11-way contest to Selangor Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari; Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun; Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang, and Deputy Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan.
“I am waiting for the opportunity to go back to serving as an MP, and focus on serving in Setiawangsa,” Nik Nazmi said.
He has held the ministerial portfolio since December 2022.
