Rafizi Ramli resigns as economy minister

KUALA LUMPUR, May 28 — Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli today issued a statement announcing his resignation as economy minister.

He announced he had submitted his resignation from Cabinet to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“This resignation will take effect from June 17, 2025. From today, I will be on leave, to use up my annual leave until June 16, 2025,” he said in the statement.

Rafizi said his final duty as economy minister was completing the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), which will be tabled in Parliament soon.

He noted that the 13MP strongly emphasises comprehensive education reforms, including several structural reforms for the Education Ministry.

“I hope the Cabinet will continue to uphold several bold reforms involving the Education Ministry as outlined in the 13MP, even though I will no longer be in the Cabinet,” he added.

Rafizi said he joined politics to promote a new accountability-based culture according to the people’s mandate.

He opined that his recent loss in the Parti Keadilan Rakyat election meant he no longer holds the mandate to translate the people’s agenda, as championed by Keadilan, into government programmes.

“As is the practice in countries that uphold democratic principles, leaders who lose in party polls should make way for victors to take their place in government.

“I would like to take this opportunity to express my deepest gratitude to the leadership and staff of the Economy Ministry, who have given me their full support throughout my tenure. I have personally witnessed the competence and capabilities of the majority of public servants here, who are able to draft policies and follow through with effective programme frameworks,” he said.
