KUALA LUMPUR, May 19 — Brigadier General Tan Chee Kee of the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) has been appointed to lead a special task force investigating the fatal crash in Teluk Intan, Perak, last week.

The task force, formed under the Transport Ministry and approved by the Cabinet, began its investigation last week and has been given 30 days from May 15 to submit its preliminary report.

The ministry said the team’s mandate is to conduct a thorough and holistic probe into the May 13 crash at the Jalan Chikus–Sungai Lampam junction, identifying root causes and recommending long-term systemic reforms.

“This investigation is not about pointing fingers; it is about identifying weaknesses in the existing system and proposing systematic and effective improvements to safeguard road users, especially involving heavy vehicles” said Transport Minister Anthony Loke in a statement released today.

The task force comprises experts and key agency representatives, including the Road Transport Department, the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros), the Royal Malaysian Police, and the Armed Forces, as well as MPs Datuk Seri Hasni Mohammad and Khairil Nizam Khirudin.

Also on board are Universiti Putra Malaysia’s Professor Dr Kulanthayan KC Mani and independent engineer Datuk Foong Choy Chye.

Among its key objectives are assessing current enforcement and transport regulations, reviewing infrastructure and safety technology, and identifying policy gaps to prevent future tragedies.

Loke added that every recommendation will be scrutinised for follow-up action at both the policy and operational levels.

The crash between the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) truck and a gravel-laden lorry occurred at 8.40am on Tuesday (May 13) along Jalan Chikus-Sungai Lampam, killing nine FRU personnel and injuring eight others.

The lorry’s driver, who was arrested on the same day, initially posted bail this afternoon, but was rearrested less than an hour later over a cow theft case in Hutan Melintang, Bagan Datuk, last month.
