SHAH ALAM, May 16 —  Selangor is kicking off a plastic-free campaign as part of a wider effort to promote environmental sustainability and reduce single-use plastic waste, with Pantai Bagan Lalang in Sepang chosen as the first location on May 24.

State executive councillor for public health and the environment Jamaliah Jamaluddin said the initiative, led by the Environment Committee, reflects Selangor’s commitment to long-term environmental protection and community education.

“This initiative is part of ongoing advocacy efforts to reduce plastic usage, while also promoting recycling practices and encouraging a more eco-friendly lifestyle among the public,” she said in a statement today.

The campaign aims to increase awareness of the long-term impact of plastic waste on public health and natural ecosystems, while empowering local communities to take a more active role in waste management.

A range of activities has been lined up for the May 24 launch event, including a 3km fun run, aerobics, exhibitions by state government agencies and educational institutions, a plastic-free food court, and a “Trash to Can” recycling exchange that rewards visitors with incentives for bringing recyclable items.

Other events include tree-planting activities and a children’s fashion show themed around plastic-free living and environmental awareness.

“To ensure the campaign’s effectiveness, all vendors at the event will not be allowed to use plastic bags or any plastic containers throughout the programme.

“Visitors who bring their own non-plastic food and beverage containers will be given special discounts for every purchase made at the food stalls,” Jamaliah said.

The Bagan Lalang event marks the first of four scheduled under the state’s Plastic-Free Campaign 2025. Future programmes are planned for June and August, with a concluding Environmental Carnival in October.

“I believe this effort will not only raise public awareness about environmental issues, but also help build a more responsible and environmentally conscious community.

“So, I call on all members of the public, especially those living in and around Sepang, to attend and support this programme.

“Let us demonstrate our commitment to the environment and become agents of change for future generations,” she added.
