SHAH ALAM, May 4 — Seri Kembangan is striving to produce 1,000 tourism ambassadors to highlight the constituency’s attractions, with the support of the local community.

Its assemblyman Wong Siew Ki said the inaugural event will focus on social media management training as a more effective promotional strategy.

“We are working with Portman College for the Serdang Tourism Ambassador programme, and plan to train over 1,000 Serdang residents on techniques to produce short videos, or TikToks.

“This will help ambassadors share the beauty and uniqueness of Seri Kembangan and Serdang to tourists out there,” she said during the Serdang video creators workshop and tourism ambassador selection at Portman College, Seri Kembangan, yesterday.

The workshop saw 50 participants learn techniques in creative content, basic photography, and strategies to use social platforms such as Instagram and TikTok.

Wong said her office targets participants as young as 13, who will receive rewards of certificates, badges and T-shirts and be honoured at a ceremony.

“Twenty training sessions with 30 to 50 participants (each) have been planned for the year, with the target of training at least 1,000 ambassadors by year-end.

“We are also collaborating with several non-governmental organisations, tuition centres, and schools to draw participants,” she said.

Wong emphasised that the campaign does not just target foreign tourists, but encourages the local community to explore and appreciate the tourism value in their own neighbourhoods.

“With active community participation, Serdang’s tourism potential can be driven in a sustainable and inclusive manner.

“This effort is in line with the state government’s goal to humanise tourism and give local residents an alternative economic source,” she said.
