SHAH ALAM, April 30 — The prohibition of hiring foreign workers at markets and stalls under the supervision of the Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) is still in its trial phase.

State executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato' Ng Suee Lim said the policy does not apply to privately-owned restaurants and food premises.

“This is still on trial. If successful, we will consider implementing it in other local authorities,” he said when contacted by Media Selangor.

Ng said the ban also extends to foreigners with permanent resident status, so as to ensure more job opportunities for locals.

He noted that the state government has received numerous complaints from residents regarding the dominance of foreign workers in markets, which has caused dissatisfaction.

“When locals are involved, the quality of food and level of safety are more assured. In fact, the state’s culinary heritage can also be preserved,” Ng said.

The ban is in line with a 2020 decision by the Selangor State Executive Council, although its implementation is subject to the discretion of each local authority.

Starting on June 1, only Malaysian citizens will be allowed to work at stalls or kiosks under MBDK and must be properly registered. Tenants who fail to comply may face action, including revoking their licences.

The state government will also reassess the effectiveness of this policy during the trial period and make improvements if necessary.

Ng added that the state government is considering allowing Malaysian citizens and their foreign spouses to apply for work permits based on valid marriage certificate verification.

Doing so is expected to increase employment opportunities for locals and help stimulate the local economy.
