KLANG, April 29 — KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM) has allocated RM400 million to gradually replace over 1,400 roll-on roll-off (RoRo) 'arm roll' lorries with Euro 5 technology, starting this May.

Its managing director Dato’ Ramli Mohd Tahir said the new lorries are equipped with the latest specifications to improve waste collection efficiency, and Euro 5 technology will reduce carbon emissions in line with environmental sustainability goals.

“Previously, we used Euro 3 technology lorries. The difference with Euro 5 is that it significantly reduces carbon emissions, has a better exhaust system, and operates with less noise. These new lorries can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 30 to 40 per cent.

“In addition, the existing fleet has been in use for around five to seven years. These new, lighter lorries can carry approximately three to four tonnes of waste.

“The replacement of these new lorries adds value and strengthens our operations, thereby enhancing the efficiency of our waste management,” he told the press after the lorries' handover ceremony today.

Ramli added that the company aims to replace 80 per cent of the fleet by the end of this year. 47 lorries, including six received today, will be handed over to subcontractors in the Selayang Municipal Council area in May.

“For a start, this new model will be used in Selayang before being extended to other local authorities, including the Kajang Municipal Council, the Kuala Langat Municipal Council, the Petaling Jaya City Council, and the Sepang Municipal Council.

“KDEBWM currently has nearly 1,400 lorries, including RoRo and compactors, but we expect to increase the number of vehicles using this technology to between 1,500 and 1,600 units in the future,” he said.
