Selangor mulls outright ban on vapes

SHAH ALAM, Apr 25 — The Selangor government is considering a state-wide ban on the sale of electronic cigarettes (vapes) following growing concern over its public health and social impact.

State executive councillor for public health and environment Jamaliah Jamaluddin said her office will organise a meeting with the Menteri Besar’s Office and the Selangor State Health Department (JKNS) soon to discuss the matter.

It will also include other key stakeholders, such as departments and agencies under the Federal and state governments, as well as local authorities.

She said that enforcement bodies, including the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry  (KPDN), will be included in the meeting to evaluate the issue from the legal, enforcement, and socioeconomic perspectives.

“The Selangor government is taking this issue seriously and will ensure that all stakeholder perspectives are considered before making any decision,” Jamaliah said in a statement today.

The development comes after Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay urged for firmer action against the use of vapes, highlighting public health risks and enforcement difficulties.

His remarks were later echoed by Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari, who expressed the state’s readiness to explore regulatory measures.

The councillor said that currently, local councils only issue licenses for the sale of electronic devices, not specifically for vape liquids or e-cigarettes.

However, with the enforcement of the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024 (Act 852) at the Federal level, the state government is seeking to align its strategies to ensure effective regulation.

“Any decision made will be based on comprehensive research, focusing on public health priorities, enforceability, and the well-being of Selangor’s citizens,” Jamaliah said.
