SHAH ALAM, April 24 — The Selangor People’s Tuition Programme (PTRS) has been identified as a main contributor to the rise in Selangor students who earned straight As in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2024.
Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the PTRS saw the number of excellent students rise to 2,368 (3.65 per cent) from 2,0005 (3.15 per cent) last year.
“The PTRS prioritises students from lower-income groups who can’t afford tuition classes. It is the state government’s continued effort to motivate them and give them access to extra classes to ensure they earn SPM certificates,” he said at the press conference while announcing SPM results at the Selangor State Education Department here today.
Amirudin, who also holds the education portfolio for the state, expressed pride over the lower absentee rate for SPM 2024.
“Absentee numbers declined from the previous year; in 2022 there were 2,387, while in 2023 there were 1,700, and this year (2024) there were 1,221.
“Performance in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics elective subjects was also encouraging. The state government will improve the PTRS by adding subjects and students,” he added.

The primary-level PTRS focuses on students in remedial classes, so they master the basic skills of reading, writing and arithmetic.
Meanwhile, the PTRS for Forms 4 and 5 students comprise extra classes in Bahasa Malaysia, English, Mathematics, Science, and Additional Mathematics, targeting students with moderate or poor grades from lower-income families.
On August 13 last year, the state government also launched the e-PTRS app, which aims to give 200,000 students access to the technology. The learning app was among improvements made to the PTRS, which was launched in 2008.
The 2025 Selangor State Budget detailed RM10 million to implement the PTRS for Forms 4 and 5 students, and RM1 million for literacy and numeracy intervention programmes in primary schools.
