Bursa extends downtrend at mid-morning over selling pressure on heavyweights

KUALA LUMPUR, April 22 — Bursa Malaysia extended its downtrend at mid-morning, weighed by selling pressure in selected heavyweights, led by the financial services, industrial products and services, and utilities sectors.

CIMB eased 14 sen to RM6.72, Press Metal Aluminium slid 10 sen to RM4.70, and YTL Corporation shaved 7.0 sen to RM1.76. These counters dragged the composite index down by a combined of 5.29 points.

At 11 am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) fell 15.45 points to 1,484.02 from Monday’s close of 1,499.47.

The benchmark index had earlier opened 7.03 points lower at 1,492.44.

The broader market was negative, with decliners leading gainers 558 versus 148, while 329 counters were unchanged, 1,390 untraded, and 30 suspended.

Turnover stood at 1.66 billion shares worth RM544.12 million.

Among other heavyweights, Public Bank went down 4.0 sen to RM4.36, YTL Power International trimmed 9.0 sen to RM3.17, and Maybank gave up 6.0 sen to RM9.92. However, Axiata and Maxis rose 1.0 sen each to RM1.96 and RM3.50.   

Of the actives, Aumas added 1.0 sen to 79 sen, Ingenieur Gudang and Magma inched down half-a-sen each to 3.5 sen and 36.5 sen, while Bina Puri and Kinergy Advancement were flat at 34.5 sen and 32.5 sen, respectively. 

On the index board, the FBM Emas Index dropped 111.93 points to 10,983.46, the FBMT 100 Index slipped 113.04 points to 10,772.67, the FBM Emas Shariah Index weakened 101.55 points to 10,783.52, the FBM 70 Index declined 164.43 points to 15,343.81 and the FBM ACE Index decreased 47.22 points to 4,518.98. 

Sector-wise, the Financial Services Index tumbled 172.28 points to 17,836.87, the Industrial Products and Services Index depreciated 2.12 points to 141.91, the Energy Index ticked down 8.08 points to 651.93, and the Plantation Index reduced 30.05 points to 7,181.08.
