SHAH ALAM, April 21 — A special task force has been established to monitor the progress of flood mitigation projects in the flood-prone areas of Sri Muda and Kota Kemuning.

Kota Kemuning assemblyman S. Preakas said the task force, comprising his office, resident representatives, local councillors and officials from the Selangor Menteri Besar’s Office, will oversee the implementation of key flood mitigation projects set to start in June.

The announcement came after a coordination meeting earlier today at the Taman Sri Muda sluice gate, led by Selangor Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS) director Datuk Mohd Nazri Yasmin.

Also present were the Menteri Besar’s political secretary Saifuddin Shafi Muhammad, government officials, and residents.

“I proposed the formation of a task force not only to monitor flood mitigation in Sri Muda but also in Bukit Kemuning, Kampung Baru Hicom, Kampung Bukit Lanchong, Kampung Lanchong Jaya, and Taman Alam Indah,” Preakas told Media Selangor.

In a Facebook post, Saifuddin confirmed the establishment of the task force, which he said will be led by Preakas and supported by various stakeholders, including himself, to ensure accountability and consistent follow-through.

“The meeting was held to hear updates by Nazri on the mitigation works that are underway and how the state government is working to accelerate their completion,” he said.

Key projects include upgrading the pump system at the Sri Muda sluice gate, increasing the capacity of existing retention ponds and constructing a new retention pond to divert excess water from Kemuning Utama to Sri Muda.

Preakas said state leaders have issued clear instructions to expedite all related works, and expressed gratitude to the agencies involved as well as Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari for responding swiftly to residents’ concerns.

“The commitment shown by all agencies highlights the state government’s seriousness in addressing the flooding issues faced by our communities,” he said.

Last week, several parts of Selangor, including Puchong, Shah Alam, Klang and Hulu Langat, were affected by flash floods after prolonged heavy rain during high tides, said state executive councillor for disaster management Mohd Najwan Halimi.

The latest measures taken build on previous flood mitigation efforts. In August last year, state executive councillor for infrastructure Dato’ Izham Hashim announced the installation of three new screw pumps at the Taman Sri Muda sluice gate.

Completed in May 2024 at a cost of RM7.1 million, the new pumps have a combined capacity of 5,100 litres per second, five times faster than previous systems, and can filter out debris without clogging.

These units supplement the existing three pumps and are designed to operate efficiently during heavy rainfall.

Yesterday, Amirudin ordered for a coordination meeting to be held with Shah Alam and Klang local councils and JPS to address the recent flash floods in Taman Sri Muda and Taman Sri Andalas. He also ordered Izham to resolve delays in flood mitigation projects at all levels.

“My office has been contacted by residents who are increasingly anxious about recurring floods, as mitigation efforts appear delayed.

“Although nearly four years have passed, the devastating floods of December 2021 remain fresh in the memory of every Selangor resident. No one wants to witness a recurrence,” he added.
