TikTok Shop, KPDN team up to fight online scams

KUALA LUMPUR, April 18 — TikTok Shop, a trusted e-commerce platform in Malaysia, has partnered with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) to raise awareness about safe online shopping through the #ShopSafe initiative.

Held in conjunction with World Consumer Rights Day, the campaign also aims to curb online scams.

Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said the ministry is pleased to work with TikTok Shop in educating the public on best practices when shopping online, while equipping them with the knowledge and tools to shop safely in the digital space.

“Most e-commerce scams occur outside official platforms, where scammers direct users to complete transactions via phone numbers, suspicious links, or direct transfers.

“TikTok Shop’s commitment to safeguarding consumers is commendable, and we look forward to continuing our collaboration to tackle online fraud,” he said in a statement.

TikTok Shop Malaysia’s director of strategic partnerships, Nur Azre Abdul Aziz, said user safety is the platform’s top priority.

“We invest in both talent and technology to ensure a safe and worry-free shopping experience, backed by a robust return and refund policy.

“In the first half of 2024 alone, we proactively rejected 20.4 million product listing attempts and two million seller account registrations globally that didn’t meet our standards,” she said.

She added that combatting online scams requires collective effort, and expressed appreciation for the support of the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (JSJK) in educating the public on #ShopSafe practices.

“Together, we can keep our community informed of emerging scam trends and the steps they can take to protect themselves,” she said.

#ShopSafe tips from TikTok Shop and KPDN include avoiding off-platform purchases, not sharing sensitive personal information, and reporting suspicious behaviour through the app.
