Myanmar suspends tourist visa applications

KUALA LUMPUR, April 9 — Due to the recent earthquake, Myanmar’s Ministry of Immigration and Population has announced that tourist visa applications will be temporarily suspended starting April 3, according to the Embassy of Malaysia in Yangon today.

It said a further announcement would be made once the service resumes.

“Business visa applications will continue to be accepted as usual,” the embassy said in a Facebook post.

On March 28, a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar and also affected neighbouring Thailand.

The media reported that the death toll from the devastating earthquake in Myanmar has climbed to 3,645, with 5,017 people injured and 148 still missing, as of 6pm local time yesterday.
