SHAH ALAM, April 4 — Some 40 house pets, including cats, dogs and snakes, have been given treatment after the gas pipe leak incident in Putra Heights, Subang Jaya on Tuesday.
The Society For The Prevention of Cruelty To Animals (SPCA) Selangor, together with the help of various animal clinics and relevant agencies, said that more than 27 cats, six dogs and two snakes have been rescued so far.
According to SPCA’s manager Kelvin Cheah, most of the pets were returned to their owners on the day of the incident itself to avoid the animals suffering more distress.
“For the creatures whose owners have yet to come forward, we have placed them at a temporary shelter. Most of the animals we treated had suffered minor injuries due to the fire or while trying to escape it. None were critical cases,” Cheah told Media Selangor.
A treatment area was set up at Kuil Sri Maha Kaliamman, Putra Heights right after the incident, and will be running until Sunday, if necessary, said Cheah.
He added that the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Hajah Norashikin herself has taken interest in the plight of the animals.
“On day one of the incident, Tengku Permaisuri already enquired about how SPCA Selangor can help, and so we set up this unit,” Cheah said.
Her Royal Highness, with her ‘Stray Free’ campaign for stray animals under the management of SPCA Selangor, has been a strong advocate of animal welfare.
From 2021, she has offered her time and ideas on how best to manage and care for stray cats and dogs in the state.
