SHAH ALAM, April 2 — The state and federal governments, as well as Petronas, will find temporary accommodation for residents affected by yesterday’s gas pipeline fire in Putra Heights.
Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said this is as repairs to the damaged homes would take quite a while.
“The state and federal governments’ priority is the safety, welfare and comfort of all those affected,” he said in a statement last night after a visit to the Putra Heights Mosque temporary relief centre.
“Those with evidence or information on any misconduct (related to the incident) should report it to the Royal Malaysia Police, which is leading the probe.
“This will be followed by a detailed investigation by authorities on the actual cause of the gas pipeline leak and blast, which caused large-scale damage to residents’ property,” he added.
Amirudin also urged victims of the incidents to check in with the State Disaster Management Unit to facilitate aid delivery.

The Fire and Rescue Department’s search-and-rescue efforts recovered 305 victims, 125 of whom were hurt in the incident from burns and smoke inhalation.
First aid was administered at the nearby Surau Nurul Iman and Sri Maha Kaliamman Temple, with victims sent to the hospital later.
“Sixty-five victims are being treated at several private and government hospitals nearby, while 60 more have been discharged and sent to the temporary relief centre,” he said.
Amirudin explained that 78 homes were severely damaged by the fire and are uninhabitable, while 10 shophouses were razed.
“According to analysis by the control centre, 327 vehicles were also damaged in the morning fire.”

He said that on JBPM’s advice, the two affected neighbourhoods — Taman Harmoni dan Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru — are uninhabitable due to the risk of electrical currents sparking a fire in the presence of gas residue.
Power supply to the area has been halted by Tenaga Nasional Bhd for the JBPM to conduct checks in the neighbourhoods, which will take 24 to 48 hours.
“I pray that all victims, especially those in hospital, make a full recovery,” he added.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had yesterday announced immediate aid of RM5,000 to each homeowner whose house was completely damaged by the fire.
Anwar, who visited the blaze site and control centre yesterday, also declared RM2,500 in aid to over 100 victims whose houses were partially damaged in the incident.
