Nearly 300 Armed Forces veterans receive disability compensation

KUANTAN, March 27 — The sacrifices of Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) veterans in protecting the country continue to be honoured through the Disability Compensation (GHU) that was disbursed to 292 recipients, involving a RM9.7 million allocation.

MAF Veterans Affairs Department (JHEV) director-general Maj-Gen Datuk Semaon Marjuki said that, so far, 273 veterans, including 14 in Pahang, comprising those who suffered injuries during operations and high-risk training, have received the GHU.

"They received the one-time payment of the GHU, which comprised different amounts depending on the seriousness of injuries sustained while serving, and it is aimed at appreciating the services and sacrifices of our veterans,” he told the press after attending the GHU presentation ceremony today.

Semaon added that they also held a programme to present Hari Raya Aidilfitri contributions to the veterans’ children, which benefited the disabled and poor.

It was held simultaneously nationwide from March 24 to March 28, in collaboration with Yayasan Veteran MAF, whereby RM53,770 was disbursed to 350 recipients.

"This distribution was through the zakat wakalah income and contributions from individuals and corporate firms who care about the sacrifices the veterans made for the country,” he said.

Meanwhile, MAF veteran Corporal (Rtd) Mohd Ismuil Shahidon said he was grateful and glad for the RM30,000 GHU given by the government for his sacrifices in defending the country through Ops Gubir in Kedahin 1976.

The 71-year-old, who suffered multiple gunshot wounds during the bloody incident, is thankful that his services are not forgotten, adding that he never expected that he would receive such an amount.

"I was assigned as a scout at the front when we faced a barrage of gunfire from the enemy, which resulted in injuries to various parts of my body, including my chest and legs.

"I think I suffered 10 gunshot wounds, but, Alhamdulillah, I have a long life. Only my legs are not that strong anymore due to the gunshot wounds,” he said, adding that he would use the money for his health expenses.
