SHAH ALAM, March 26 — As host of the Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2026, Selangor is pursuing key preparations to ensure the successful organisation of the sporting event.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the biennial games will not only serve as a platform for Selangor athletes to showcase their talents, but also significantly impact the economy and improve the people’s lives.

“In terms of tournament preparations, we started early with the goal of delivering a well-organised, high-quality, and memorable event.

“This is a great opportunity for the people of Selangor to witness Malaysia’s largest sporting event and show strong support for our athletes. We will collaborate with Kuala Lumpur for facility use and Nilai, Negeri Sembilan, for the velodrome.

“We have facilities such as swimming pools and football fields, and almost every district in Selangor has its own stadium, even if it’s a mini stadium,” he said during the Dialog TVS programme aired last night.

Regarding athlete preparations, Amirudin said the sports association is actively organising training programmes to maintain their momentum, expressing hope that Selangor will secure the overall championship.

“But sports are unpredictable. It all depends on the conditions on competition day. Top athletes may fall ill, while others unexpectedly rise to the occasion and win gold.

“We will continue our efforts while refining certain aspects to ensure stability and maintain excellent results,” he said.

Amirudin said sports events are not just about competition, but also their impact on the entire ecosystem, including the economy, livelihoods, culture, and tourism.

Previously, state executive councillor for youth, sports, and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi said the Sukma and Para Sukma organising committees had decided to hold the games after August 2026.

Selangor last hosted Sukma in 1998, where it won the overall championship.
