SHAH ALAM, March 23 — The retail sector has the potential to become a main contributor to the state’s economy, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.
He said events such as Selangor Havoc Raya Fest, held at the Setia City Convention Centre here yesterday, could become a catalyst or platform to drive the economy.
“Selangor is the most suitable place for its residents’ spending ability, 70 to 80 per cent coverage of online facilities, and its vibrant economy, and I believe the retail sector can become a contributor to the state economy today and in the future,” he said.
He was met at the officiation of the festival last night, with state executive councillor for youth, sports and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi also present.

Meanwhile, Amirudin said the festival proved the need for a physical shopping experience, even as the businesses grow rapidly online.
“This is the new situation for business, where it is not just physical, but is done actively and well online.
“I believe the festival is much needed even though we have transitioned to online platforms, or e-commerce, because in the end, customers want to feel and see products physically before deciding to buy, especially as the festive season approaches,” he added.
“This is also Visit Selangor Year 2025, and programmes such as this draw not only Selangor residents but also people from other states to this shopping haven, centred in the festival,” he said.

Selangor Havoc Raya Fest was organised by the state government in cooperation with Havoc Event & Management Sdn Bhd. Starting March 21, it is being held over 108 hours consecutively until March 25.
The festival gathers 180 vendors of various Aidilfitri essentials, and aims to attract 2.5 million visitors.
