KUALA LUMPUR, March 21 — Two 12-year-old girls were among 38 motorcyclists detained for suspected involvement in illegal racing during an operation by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) in Jalan Ampang and Jalan Sultan Ismail early yesterday.
JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said a total of 196 summonses were issued and 19 motorcycles were seized, with driving without a licence recorded as the most common offence.
He said the operation was carried out following public complaints about illegal racing activities in the area.
"This is shocking, as the girls were riding motorcycles that had modified exhausts and brakes, among many other violations," he told a press conference after attending the Ihya Ramadan programme organised by Kuala Lumpur JPJ yesterday.
Also present were Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah, JPJ Senior Enforcement director Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan and Kuala Lumpur JPJ director Hamidi Adam.
Aedy Fadly said most of those detained were under 18 years old and still in school, adding that JPJ had summoned the parents of the underage riders for further action.
"We will determine the next course of action, which may involve other enforcement agencies, as these parents let their children take part in illegal racing," he said.
