Samyang Foods’ export surge past 1 trillion won on strength of Buldak

SEOUL, March 19 — South Korean food company Samyang Foods Inc announced today that its exports exceeded the 1 trillion won (RM3 billion) mark for the first time in its history last year, driven by the growing global demand for its popular ‘Buldak’ spicy ramyeon.

According to the company, its outbound shipments totalled 1.34 trillion won in 2024, reflecting a 65 per cent increase from the previous year, Yonhap news agency reported.

The figure accounted for 77 per cent of Samyang Foods’ total sales for the year, which stood at 1.73 trillion won, the company said in a press release.

The record-breaking surge in exports was attributed to the rising popularity of its spicy ramyeon products in international markets, particularly in the United States (US) and China.

Samyang Foods noted that approximately 1 billion units of its Buldak Bokkeummyeon, commonly known as “fire ramyeon,” are sold annually across 100 countries.

Since its debut in 2012, cumulative sales of the hot chicken-flavoured instant noodles have surpassed seven billion units, generating revenue of more than 4 trillion won (RM12.2 billion), the company added.

The Buldak ramyeon gained worldwide recognition after its extreme spiciness sparked a viral food-eating challenge in 2014.
