RIYADH, March 17 — Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman has launched the Saudi Architecture Characters Map blueprint, showcasing 19 distinct architectural styles inspired by the Kingdom’s diverse geography and heritage.
As Chairman of the Supreme Committee for Saudi Architectural Design Guidelines, the Crown Prince emphasised that Saudi Arabia’s architecture reflects the nation’s cultural and environmental diversity, Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.
He highlighted the importance of sustainable urban planning that integrates traditional elements into modern designs.
"Saudi architecture blends our rich heritage with contemporary design thinking. We are enhancing urban landscapes, improving quality of life, and creating a framework that balances the past and present.
"This model will serve as a global source of inspiration for innovation in architectural design," said the Crown Prince.
The initiative is expected to contribute over SAR8 billion (RM9.6 billion) to the Kingdom’s gross domestic product (GDP) by 2030 and create more than 34,000 direct and indirect jobs across engineering, construction and urban development sectors.
It also aims to boost tourism, hospitality, and real estate by making Saudi cities more attractive to visitors.
The first phase of implementation will focus on Al-Ahsa, Taif, Makkah, and Abha, prioritising major projects, government buildings and commercial structures.
It highlights 19 styles — Central Najdi, Northern Najdi, Tabuk Coast, Madinah Rural, Hejazi Coast, Sarawat Mountains, Tuhama Coast, Farasan Islands, Najran, Al Ahsa Oasis and Eastern Najdi.
Collaboration between government agencies, engineering firms, and real estate developers will drive the initiative.
Architectural design studios will support engineers and designers through engineering guidelines, training workshops and skill development programmes to uphold sustainability and quality standards.
