SHAH ALAM, March 16 — The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) has been instructed to review the teaching accreditation status of an individual with a religious appearance who recently went viral for an act of violence against a student in Kajang.

State executive councillor for Islam and innovation culture Dr Mohammad Fahmi Ngah said that if it is confirmed the religious figure or teacher holds accreditation from the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais), it should be revoked immediately, and he should also be banned from teaching religion in the state.

“Based on preliminary investigations received from the authorities, I have directed Jais to begin a review to determine whether the religious figure or teacher holds any form of teaching accreditation issued by Mais.

“If it is confirmed that this individual holds a Mais accreditation, then it should be revoked immediately, and they should be prohibited from teaching religion in Selangor,” he said in a statement today.

Fahmi also expressed his disappointment over the incident, which clearly contradicts Islamic principles and teachings that advocate rational solutions based on existing legal frameworks.

“I am deeply disappointed by this violent act, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.

“I strongly condemn all forms of violence, particularly when the perpetrator carries the image of a religious figure or teacher, as they should uphold noble character to set an example for society, especially the younger generations,” he said.

As such, the councillor urged all religious figures and teachers accredited by Mais in the state to always uphold the dignity of Islam and avoid violent actions that could tarnish religious figures and educators' moderate image.

“All actions must be based on noble character, rational consideration, and adherence to the prevailing legal framework,” Fahmi said.

Yesterday, it was reported that an individual who was arrested for punching a secondary school student due to a road dispute near Saujana Impian, Kajang, on Friday (March 14), was remanded for one day.

Kajang district police chief ACP Naazron Abdul Yusof said that six individuals have been called to provide statements regarding the case.
