DVS foils attempt to transport ASF-infected pigs

PUTRAJAYA, March 13 — The Selangor Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) and the Sepang police thwarted an attempt to transport pigs suspected of being infected with African Swine Fever (ASF) out of Sepang district during an operation on March 10.

Its director Dr Hassuzana Khalil said a man was detained for allegedly transporting the pigs without authorisation from the DVS.

While Selangor DVS officers were trailing the suspect’s lorry, two four-wheel-drive vehicles driven by ‘tontos’ (lookouts) attempted to block the team’s vehicle to prevent them from intercepting it.

“Selangor DVS sought assistance from the Sepang police station, leading to all three vehicles being stopped along Jalan Besar in Sungai Pelek, Sepang," she said in a statement today.

17 pigs, two pig carcasses, a lorry, and two four-wheel-drive vehicles were seized, and an investigation is conducted under Section 36 of the Animals Act 1953.

Dr Hassuzana added that the two tontos, who are in their 30s and 50s, were being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code.
