SHAH ALAM, March 12 — Kota Anggerik state assemblyman Mohd Najwan Halimi will contest for Parti Keadilan Rakyat's Shah Alam division chief post on April 20.
The elections for division-level positions for the upcoming party polls will be held from April 11 to April 20.
Najwan, who is also the state executive councillor for youth, sports, and entrepreneurship, emphasised the need to secure Shah Alam as it plays a crucial role for the party in retaining Selangor, adding that Keadilan has strong support in the area.
“In Shah Alam, Harapan’s (Pakatan Harapan) strength heavily relies on Keadilan. If Keadilan weakens, it will have a significant impact on the Selangor government.
“We will mobilise our strength to consolidate our support and offer more in Shah Alam. Shah Alam’s significance lies in its multiracial composition.
“(Keadilan President) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has advised that leadership must embrace diversity in terms of race,” he said during a press conference after the Kota Anggerik Iftar ceremony and International Women’s Day celebration at the MBSA Convention Centre this evening.
Rodziah Ismail, who is also Ampang MP, currently holds the Shah Alam division chief post and has previously said she will defend the position.
Meanwhile, Najwan said that empowering women requires concrete action, not just rhetoric, and praised Selangor’s policies on the subject.
He said there is no point in criticising the lack of women’s participation in Keadilan if one does not lead by example.
“Previously, Keadilan’s representatives in Shah Alam were in Kota Anggerik and Batu Tiga. However, in the last election, we lost the Batu Tiga (formerly Rodziah) state seat due to certain decisions made by our leadership.
“Nonetheless, we remain determined. We will ensure that Keadilan’s influence in Shah Alam does not weaken,” Najwan said.
On a separate matter, he said Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) or MBI has allocated funds for home repairs for victims in Sekinchan but has not disclosed the amount, as the cost estimation is still underway.
The victims remain at the temporary relief centre due to the unpredictable weather.
This incident marks the second tragedy to strike Sekinchan in a week. At 7 am on Thursday (March 6), a storm hit Kampung Parit 4, damaging eight houses.
“MBI has allocated funds and is currently assessing the victims’ losses.
“Victims will only be allowed to return home once the weather stabilises,” said Najwan, who also holds the state’s disaster management portfolio.
