Malaysia's IPI up 2.1 pct in January 2025

KUALA LUMPUR, March 12 — Malaysia’s Industrial Production Index (IPI) increased by 2.1 per cent year-on-year in January 2025, led by growth in manufacturing sector output, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia.

Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the increase in IPI was mainly contributed by output growth in the manufacturing sector, which grew at a slower rate of 3.7 per cent in January 2025 compared to 5.8 per cent in December 2024.

“Conversely, the mining and electricity sector production (in January 2025) recorded a decrease of 3.1 per cent (December 2024: 0.9 per cent) and 0.1 per cent (December 2024: 3.5 per cent), respectively,” he said in a statement today.

On a month-on-month basis, the IPI in January 2025 still contracted at the same rate as in the previous month, which stood at -0.4 per cent.

Commenting on the performance of the mining sector, Uzir said the 3.1 per cent contraction in the mining sector in January 2025 was driven by a double-digit decrease of 10.0 per cent in crude petroleum and condensate output (December 2024: -6.5 per cent), while natural gas production maintained a stable growth of 1.4 per cent (December 2024: 5.9 per cent).

Meanwhile, the electricity index declined by 0.1 per cent in January 2025, compared to a 3.5 per cent increase in the previous month.
