Ahmad Shapawi appointed Yakeb chairman

KUALA LUMPUR, March 8 — Datuk Ahmad Shapawi Ismail has been officially appointed as the National Athletes Welfare Foundation's (Yakeb) chairman, effective today.

The Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) expressed confidence that his vast experience as the former National Sports Council (MSN) director-general makes him the right person to lead Yakeb and safeguard the welfare of former national athletes.

“KBS congratulates Ahmad Shapawi on his appointment as Yakeb chairman. We believe he is the right figure to lead Yakeb and ensure the well-being of former national athletes,” it said in a statement.

Shapawi succeeds Datuk Noorul Ariffin Abdul Majeed, who held the position for three terms since 2019.

He will be supported by the Yakeb board of directors for the 2025-2027 term, including Hafiz Mat Ramly (Principal Assistant Secretary, Finance Ministry), Chan Hong Jin (Deputy Secretary-General [Strategic], KBS) and Ahmad Munawwar Helmi Salim (Director, National Sports Institute).

Other board members include Normala Abdul Rashid (former national footballer/President of Srikandi Sports and Charity Club), Sharon Wee Ee Li (former national squash player/Vice President 1 of the Squash Racquets Association of Malaysia), R. Sharmendran (former national karate athlete/acting head coach of the national karate squad), and former national badminton player Soo Beng Kiang.
