SHAH ALAM, March 3 — Selangor Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari has expressed his ambition to acquire the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (LTSAAS), also known as Subang Airport, and turn it into a point of pride for the state.
Amirudin said the airport, which is projected to handle up to eight million passengers by 2030 following a major upgrade, could provide a steady revenue stream for Selangor.
“If I had no budget limitations, I would purchase Subang Airport to ensure it is state-owned, generates dividends for Selangor, and becomes a source of pride for the state,” he said during the ‘Kopi O, Teh Tarik’ morning show on Selangor FM.
He pointed to the Sarawak government’s acquisition of MASwings Sdn Bhd, which gave the state control of its own airline, as an example of how Selangor could manage its own airport.
Meanwhile, Amirudin said the demolition of the Shah Alam Stadium, making way for the new Shah Alam Sports Complex (KSSA), is progressing well and is now 78 per cent complete, ahead of schedule.
“We expect construction of the new stadium to begin in May or June this year and be completed by 2027,” he said.
He also acknowledged the lack of a centralised venue for Selangor to host the 2026 Malaysian Games (Sukma).
Amirudin said the state is considering two main options: holding the event at Stadium Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur or using the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) for the opening and closing ceremonies.
Similarly, Amirudin said the state is leveraging Malaysia’s Asean chairmanship this year to promote Visit Selangor Year (VSY) 2025, with a series of promotional activities showcasing Selangor’s tourism offerings.
However, he clarified that the state’s tourism campaign will be integrated into the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 campaign next year.
“VSY 2025 is actually a prelude to Visit Malaysia Year 2026, and we will incorporate Visit Selangor Year into the national campaign,” he said.
