As Ramadan starts, Anwar urges Muslims to show compassion, civility

PUTRAJAYA, Feb 28 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on all Muslims in the country to demonstrate compassion and civility as a way to fully embrace the spirit of worshipping God during Ramadan.

He said Ramadan is the best madrasah to educate oneself in terms of integrity, discipline and social dimensions.

“Ramadan teaches us empathy and concern for the less fortunate.

“Our problem is that we all know the rituals (of worshipping God), but we don’t really embrace it,” he said when addressing students of Sekolah Sultan Alam Shah after joining them for Friday prayers at the school’s mosque today.

In his speech, Anwar also emphasised the importance of incorporating values of good manners as part of the country’s philosophy of education.

“We may achieve success with wealth and luxury, but if manners are lacking, there will be opportunities for corruption, criticism, and oppression. This would indicate an education that is devoid of ethical and moral values,” he added.

Also present was Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek.
