SHAH ALAM, Feb 26 — Selangor is exploring new technologies and materials to improve road quality and ensure long-term durability, said state executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Dato’ Izham Hashim.

Addressing its road quality concerns, he said 60 per cent of the roads have sustained structural damage and exceeded their lifespan due to heavy traffic.

“Many of our roads have already expired and need upgrading. The structures are damaged, and repairs are costly.

“We cannot address them all simultaneously, so we are doing it in phases. Patching them temporarily will not provide a long-term solution.

"However, we are patching the roads to prevent accidents and potholes. The repairs will be done in stages, based on available funding and careful consideration of each road’s needs and the materials and technology to be used,” he said in his winding-up speech for the Motion of Thanks on the Royal Address by Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj during the State Legislative Assembly session yesterday.

The state government has allocated RM10 million annually for road assessments and improvements.

Izham also responded to Balakong state assemblyman Ong Chun Wei’s concerns about the quality of the patching materials, noting that they typically do not last long.

He said that while audits are conducted on the suppliers providing the materials, the heavy daily use of the roads has affected the durability of the temporary patches.
