SHAH ALAM, Feb 24 — The waste-to-energy (WTE) plant project in Batu Arang, Rawang, will be developed as an Eco Park incorporating various additional components, including an innovation research centre.

State executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato' Ng Suee Lim said the project will also feature a solar farm, a green energy education centre, and community facilities like a recreational park for local residents.

“The construction of this WTE plant draws inspiration from successful facilities in several developed countries, including Japan, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom.

“Experiences and technologies from these countries serve as references to ensure that the WTE plant to be developed is environmentally friendly, energy-efficient, and beneficial to the community,” he said.

Ng was speaking during the winding-up session for the Motion of Thanks on the Royal Address by the Sultan of Selangor at the Selangor State Legislative Assembly session today.

He added that Batu Arang was chosen as the site for the WTE plant based on several factors, including its proximity to Tenaga Nasional Berhad’s main intake substation, which allows for more efficient energy transmission.

Its stable terrain enables the construction of a structurally sound WTE plant, while Batu Arang's location near major highways enhances accessibility.

“Community facilities will also be provided, including a health clinic and upgrades to the existing access road. Additionally, a new access road will be built to minimise disruptions to residents,” Ng said.

The Sekinchan state assemblyman acknowledged the public concerns and objections over the project, but assured that the WTE plant would be strictly monitored by the Department of Environment.

He noted that the increasing waste disposal rate, particularly domestic waste, has necessitated the implementation of a more environmentally friendly and energy-efficient WTE plant.

“With a high population density reaching 7.3 million people, we generate approximately 7,000 tonnes of solid waste daily, which accounts for a quarter of the total waste produced in Malaysia each day,” Ng said.
