SHAH ALAM, Feb 22 — The suggestion to include e-sports as an event in the 2026 Malaysian Games (Sukma) in Selangor will be brought up at the supreme council meeting on Wednesday.

State executive councillor for youth, sports and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi said Selangor wants to expand the sport at the grassroots to produce more future talent.

“The Sukma supreme council meeting will be chaired by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh and joined by sports executive councillors of each state.

“As Sukma host, Selangor is considering adding e-sports to future editions as it is not a core sport,” he said.

He was met after the Selangor Future Cup 2025 launch at AEON Shah Alam here today. The match was officiated by Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

Selangor Future Cup 2025, which ends tomorrow, boasts an overall prize value of RM200,000, with Todak Academy also offering winners scholarships for technical and vocational education and training up to diploma level, worth RM160,000.

On the renovation of Hotel Carlton in Section 13 as the state e-sports hub, Najwan said talks with Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated), or MBI, will be held soon.

“We will look into methods to develop the premises as a sports hub that isn’t just a competition venue, but also a sports software accessories centre. We have the location, but costs and entities in charge need further discussion,” he said.

Amirudin, when tabling the 2025 Selangor State Budget, announced an RM1 million allocation to renovate Hotel Carlton into an e-sports hub.

He said the initiative provides opportunities for the state to host e-sports competitions at the Asean and international levels.

In July, Selangor Red Giants (SRG) ended Malaysia’s seven-year title drought by winning the Mid Season Cup Mobile Legends: Bang Bang 2024, held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah said SRG’s victory was an extraordinary, historic achievement.
