KLANG, Feb 22 — Gopeng Street is soon to be a renowned arts and culture market under a redevelopment project worth RM10 billion, said state executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato’ Ng Suee Lim.
He said the 240m street is set to be Selangor’s new tourist attraction after its opening in December.
“The Gopeng Street project will not only revitalise Klang’s heritage sites, but also provide opportunities to small-time entrepreneurs to generate local economic growth.
“We are aiming for Gopeng Street to become a tourism icon on a par with Petaling Street in Kuala Lumpur, Jonker Walk in Melaka, and Concubine Lane in Perak,” he said.
He said this at the Gopeng Street pre-launch at the Klang Commercial Convention Centre yesterday, which was also attended by Klang Deputy Mayor Mohd Zary Affendi Mohd Arif.

Ng added that Gopeng Street’s redevelopment will be done in three phases, with the first one (construction of an entryway, mural art, street furniture and historic elements) underway.
He said the second phase involves the rehabilitation of Pasar Jawa and Sungai Klang, while the last phase covers the connection of Jambatan Kota to Pengkalan Batu, upgrading food stalls, and the beautification of the Pengkalan Batu public park.
“What’s important is cleanliness. We are strict on ensuring Klang is always clean, and this needs cooperation from all parties, especially the Klang Royal City Council,” he said.
Gopeng Street is set to feature 30 to 40 food and beverage entrepreneurs every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 3pm to 12am.
